IPLとはIndia Pale Lagerの略。
当時はIPA的なホップのキャラクターでありながら、
ドライな味わいということが革新的だった訳ですが、
現代においてはそもそもIPAがドライな路線になっていたり、
Westcoast Pilsなどの登場もあり、
ますます立ち位置の難しいスタイルになっていると感じています。
そもそもの定義が曖昧なビールでもありますしね。
IPLをつくるにあたり、パシフィック的な解釈ですが、
ラガーらしさ、それは即ちクリスピーなモルトの風味と
ノーブルホップのシャープな苦味は欠かせないと思っていて、
そのバランスを崩さないようにアメリカンホップなどを
徐々に重ねていきIPAらしさを表現する、
というところが狙いでもあります。

今回はホップのバランスを変更し、少し苦味を抑えつつ、
このスタイルの絶妙な落とし所というのを意識しながら仕込みました。
仕上がりですが、柑橘や樹脂系のアロマを
はっきりと感じつつ少しだけハーバルな一面も。
口に含むとホップのフレーバーがどっと広がりますが、
しっかりとモルトのクリスピーさも感じられます。
ラガーらしいスパイシーさや、苦味もありながら、
適度にジューシーさのある後味です。

良い具合に、IPLらしさ（難しい)を体現した？
ビールになったのではないかと思います。
その曖昧さから、比較的守備範囲の広いビールでもあるので、
様々なシチュエーションで楽しんでいだだけたら嬉しいです。

IPL stands for India Pale Lager. Back then, it was innovative because it had the hop character of an IPA while maintaining a dry taste. However, in modern times, IPAs have generally become drier, and with the emergence of styles like West Coast Pils, IPLs have become an even more challenging style to define. It’s a beer with a rather ambiguous definition.

When brewing an IPL, I took a Pacific-style interpretation, emphasizing lager qualities such as the crisp malt flavor and the sharp bitterness of noble hops, which I believe are essential. The goal was to maintain that balance while gradually layering in American hops to express the IPA characteristics.

For this batch, I adjusted the hop balance to slightly reduce the bitterness, while being mindful of finding the perfect balance for this style.

The result is a beer with a distinct aroma of citrus and resin, with just a hint of herbal notes. Upon tasting, the hop flavors burst forth, yet the crispness of the malt is also clearly present. There’s a lager-like spiciness and bitterness, but with a pleasantly juicy aftertaste.

I believe it has successfully captured the essence of an IPL (which is a bit tricky). Its ambiguity makes it a relatively versatile beer, so I would be happy if you could enjoy it in various settings.
